Empowering Indigenous Futures: Navigate Your Path with Scholarships, Bursaries, and Grants for Post-Secondary Education in Alberta

  • Open to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students registered in grade 12 who are completing the requirements of a high school diploma

  • This scholarship is only available to Indigenous, First Nation, Inuit, and Metis.
  • 15 Applicants accepted per year.
  • There will be a screening and interview process for all applicants.
  • This Scholarship Covers students tuition up to 80%

  •  3 scholarships are awarded annually to students who have just completed their high school education and are in their first year of post-secondary study at an accredited institution.

  • Applicants must be First Nations, Inuit, or Métis
  • Have been living in Alberta for the last three years & plan to enroll full-time in a health field at the college, technical institute or university level.

  • Four scholarships of $2,000.00 each are available annually
  • One scholarship is targeted to an Indigenous student that meets the eligibility requirements
  • Eligible applicants are students in good standing, registered full time, and continuing studies in a geomatics program at a recognized University, Technical Institute or Community College in Canada
  • Deadline for application is May 15th of each year

  • The Bursary is intended for First Nations students enrolled in a recognized post secondary course of studies
  • The deadline for applications is the end of October
  • The award is for amounts up to $1000
  • Preference is given to students who have already completed part of their program of studies and may be unable to finish because of their financial situation

  • Indigenous Peoples Scholarship: awarded Indigenous students to help develop their skills and knowledge in the renewable energy sector
  • Pursuing full-time studies at an accredited Canadian or United States trades or technical school, college or university
  • Application Deadline: September 15, 2024
  • Amount: Up to $3,000 per scholarship

  • Canada Post gives $2,000 grants to Indigenous Peoples who are a member of a First Nation, Métis or Inuit community
  • Have been out of school for 1 year or more and are returning
  • Have already returned to school and completed 1 full year of studies
  • August 31st: Deadline for applications

  • Value: Up to $4,200 per year or up to $525 per month of study
  • Eligibility: have a financial need
  • A full-time student in a qualified program at a designated school
  • Income thresholds for Canada Student Grant eligibility for full-time students: Previous year’s gross annual family income
  • Apply for student aid through your province or territory

  • Eligible for Indigenous students residing in Canada near Cenovus operating areas who are pursuing a full-time degree, diploma or certified trade
  • These scholarships are valued at $5,000 and are renewable for up to four years, or to the completion of a degree
  • Cold Lake First Nation Scholarship Application Deadline September 30, 2024

  • Offering five $2,000 scholarships to Indigenous students who are dependents of CINUP plan members (Certificate number and Plan Member name required)
  • Enrolled in a recognized post-secondary institution or vocational/trade program
  • Full-time or part-time student (minimum 6 credit hours per semester or 15 hours/week in a vocational/trade program)
  • Completed application form, proof of Indigenous identity, proof of enrollment, and a 500–750 word personal statement
  • Application Deadline: applications must be submitted by June 30

    • Application Deadline: January 19, 2024.
    • Value: $5,000
    • Identify as Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, or Métis) in Canada
    • Enrolled in post-secondary education in Canada (full time or part time)
    • Currently completing a diploma, undergraduate, or graduate program and graduating in 2025 or beyond

    • Individual funding is avaiable for Indigenous youth in the areas of education, sports & recreation, health & medical and arts and culture
    • Dreamcatcher provides funding aligned with the following sectors: Education, Sports & Recreation, Health,  Arts & Culture, and Clean Water
    • Applications accepted mid-July for September start. Mid-October for January start

    • Post-Secondary Funding Program on behalf of Indigenous Services Canada, which assists eligible students from specific Alberta First Nations
    • Funding is available for those planning on attending an Upgrading, Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor degree, Master degree, or PhD program during the 2024-2025 academic year
    • For individuals who are ineligible to receive post-secondary funding through their First Nation

    • Six bursaries valued at $3,000 each applied directly to tuition
    • Be a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit student
    • Demonstrate financial need
    • Be enrolled in final year of study of an undergraduate degree, diploma, or certificate program at an Alberta post-secondary institution in the upcoming fall

    • Post-Secondary Funding Program on behalf of Indigenous Services Canada, which assists eligible students from specific Alberta First Nations
    • Funding is available for those planning on attending an Upgrading, Certificate, Diploma, Bachelor degree, Master degree, or PhD program during the 2024-2025 academic year
    • For individuals who are ineligible to receive post-secondary funding through their First Nation

    • Value: $4,000,
    • Application Deadline: Nov. 1 of each year.
    • Awarded to an Indigenous Peoples (status or non-status Indian, Metis or Inuit) enrolled at a Canadian university or college.
    • The student must already be attending the post-secondary institution and must be either enrolled in a journalism program or actively involved with a news organization associated with the institution

    • GFOA offers 11 scholarships ranging from $5000 to $25,000
    • Citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada
    • Plan to pursue a career in state/provincial or local government finance
    • Student has not been a past winner of a GFOA scholarship
    • Applications for 2025 opens in November 2024

    • Five $10,000 Horatio Alger Indigenous Achievement Scholarships awarded in partnership with Indspire
    • First Nation (status and non-status), Inuit and Métis high school students
    • Enrolled full-time in a high school within Canada, starting a four-year post-secondary program in the fall
    • This is a renewable award of $2,500, students must maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA and a full-time course load to receive the renewed support each year

    • Value:  Up to $2,500 each year the student is enrolled (up to a maximum of four years)
    • Must Be a resident of Alberta
    • Must have a Métis or Treaty registration number to apply
    • Be able to provide proof of acceptance into a post-secondary educational institution in a petroleum industry career path
    • Completed application must be received by Imperial at Cold Lake by June 1

    • Two awards of $2,000 are presented annually to an Indigenous law student that best demonstrates financial need, academic merit and commitment to Indigenous legal matters.
    • Must be an Indigenous law student (i.e. First Nations, Métis or Inuit) currently enrolled in law school who, at a minimum, has substantially completed their first year of legal studies
    • Application Deadline: September 30th

    • The Indigenous bursaries search tool is a searchable list of 537 bursaries, scholarships and incentives aimed at Indigenous students across Canada.

    Indspire Building Brighter Futures: Bursaries & Scholarships

    • Indspire has provided over $217 million in financial support through more than 66,000 bursaries, scholarships and awards to First Nations, Inuit and Métis students. 

    • Value: $2,000 per term, maximum of $4,000 per academic year
    • Enrolled full-time in a certificate, diploma, applied or bachelor’s degree program at an eligible public post-secondary school or First Nations College in Alberta
    • Status First Nations, Non-Status First Nations, Métis or Inuit
    • A resident of Alberta

    • Two $5,000 scholarships and two $2,500 scholarships are available to assist First Nations students with post-secondary education costs
    • Confirmation of First Nations identity
    • Confirmation of registration at a Canadian post-secondary institution in a program directly relevant to children’s holistic health or wellbeing
    • Deadline for applications is April 30, 2024 11 p.m. Eastern Time

    • The ManCap Foundation awards six education grants worth $5,000 each to Alberta high school students entering their first year of post-secondary studies
    • High marks are not a requirement and financial need is a criterion
    • Must be a high school graduate, and entering first year of studies at an accredited Alberta post-secondary institution, and demonstrate entrepreneurial ambition

    • The Master of Educational Technology (MET) program offers an annual award valued at the cost of tuition* (up to 30 credits for the master’s degree or 15 for the certificate) for Indigenous students specific to the UBC MET program.
    • Applicants should demonstrate, good academic standing, engagement with educational technology and leadership, community service or volunteerism
    • Application Deadline: May 5
    • Total Value: Tuition for up to 30 credits of MET coursework

    • Two bursaries shall be provided annually to students demonstrating financial need, involvement in and contribution to community as a whole and/or demonstrated academic merit and performance and Calculations (Northern Lakes College), Geomatics Engineering Technology, Geomatics Engineering, Engineering Design and Drafting Technology or Geographic Information Systems Technology
    • Institution of Study: Lethbridge College, NAIT, SAIT, Saskatchewan Polytechnic, University of Calgary, and Northern Lakes College
    • Deadlines: August 1, November 1, February 1

    • Under the joint supervision of a home and host professor, successful senior undergraduate students, graduate students, as well as postdoctoral fellows will receive a $6,000 research award to conduct a 12- to 24-week research project in the other country. Awards are offered in partnership with Mitacs’s Canadian academic partners (and, in some cases, with Mitacs’s international partners) and are subject to available funding. 
    • Must be registered as full-time senior undergraduates, graduate students, or postdoctoral fellows at an eligible Canadian institution or eligible international institution and remain as such throughout their Globalink Research Award

    • MLT Aikins is committed to supporting Indigenous perspectives and representation in the legal community. They consistently work to foster a learning environment that supports Indigenous success in the legal profession and beyond
    • The MLT Aikins Indigenous Scholarship awards $6000 to a 2nd year Indigenous Law Student in Canada
    • To be eligible, applicants must be in their second year of law school and provide a cover letter, resumé, transcripts and a reference from their Indigenous community. Second-year law students across Canada 

    • Eligibility for Canadians to apply for Native American Scholarships:
    • For a student to be eligible for many Native American scholarships, such as BIA scholarships, the student should be an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe
    • A “band card” issued by the Band Council of a Canadian Reserve, or by the Department of Indian Affairs in Ottawa
    • Birth or baptism records
    • An affidavit from a tribal official or other person knowledgeable about the applicant’s or recipient’s family history
    • Identification from a recognized Native America provincial or territorial organization

    Native American Scholarships Fund

    • The Native American Scholarships endowment fund was established in 1988 to foster a sense of shared purpose and positive interaction between archaeologists and Native Americans. Since 1998, the SAA has used endowment income to award the Arthur C. Parker Scholarship. In 2009, the Society added two new awards to support undergraduate and graduate education in archaeology and, in 2021, a new award for Native American women.
    • Scholarships are open to all Native peoples from anywhere in the Americas, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, and Indigenous Pacific Islanders. See scholarship descriptions above for any other eligibility requirements. 
    • Opens for applications on October 1. The application deadline is January 31.

    • The NSERC Indigenous Student Ambassadors (NISA) grant aims to engage Indigenous students and fellows in promoting interest and participation in the natural sciences and engineering (NSE) 
    • Value: up to $5000
    • Must be an Indigenous person in Canada registered at a Canadian postsecondary institution, polytechnic, college or CEGEP in the NSE or have been registered last term and plan to return next term to one of those institutions for studies in the NSE or be a postdoctoral fellow in the NSE at a Canadian postsecondary institution
    • Application Deadline: Between two and six months before start of activity

    Northern Alberta Development Council - First Nations, Métis & Inuit Bursary

    • The First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) bursary program provides funding for Indigenous students in the form of a non-repayable bursary if they agree to live and work in northern Alberta for one year of full-time employment in return for each year of bursary support received.
    • Employment must be in the field of studies for which the bursary was provided
    • Between February 1 to June 1 and June 5 to November 15 of each year, students may apply for the complete year of studies that starts in the fall between both intakes

    Nutrien Indigenous Youth Financial Management Awards

    • Open to Indigenous students in Grades 11 or 12 pursuing post-secondary education in finance, management, commerce, accounting or related fields
    • Value: Three scholarships of up to $5000
    • Proof of Indigenous ancestry
    • Current students (max. age of 19)
    • Pursuing a post-secondary education related to finance, management, commerce or similar fields.
    • Academically successful

    ‍Pattison Media Equity Scholarships

    • A total of up to eight (8) $2,500 scholarships will be awarded in to recipients based on geography
    • Must be a resident of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, or Manitoba
    • Up to 4 recipients chosen attending on a full-time basis, a post-secondary institution in a recognized Broadcast or Online Journalism program
    • Up to 4 recipients chosen attending on a full-time basis, a post-secondary institution in a recognized Broadcasting Radio or Television On-air program

    ‍ Petro-Canada Award for Indigenous Students

    • The Petro-Canada Award for Indigenous Students will assist students in Indigenous communities with Petro-Canada sites with the cost of attending high school
    • 8 bursaries will be awarded annually in the amount of $750 each to students currently attending high school within Canada
    • Deadlines: June 1
    • Program of Study: Any
    • Level of Study: High School
    • Indigenous Affiliation: Any
    • Other: Communities with formalized Petro-Canada relationships

    RBC Future Launch Scholarship for Indigenous Youth

    • 20 scholarships are awarded annually valued up to $10,000 each per year (up to 4 years) to First Nations, Inuit and Métis students across Canada demonstrating strong academic performance and community involvement
    • For students that have applied or are currently attending an accredited post-secondary institution in Canada
    • Must maintain a full course load that leads to a recognized degree, certificate or diploma
    • Require financial assistance to pursue your education
    • Not an RBC employee or a dependent of an RBC employee
    • Must be between the ages of 15-29 at the time of application
    • Applications for 2025 will open in the Fall of 2024

    Robert C. Carson Memorial Bursary

    • Nominees must be Alberta residents and full-time students enrolled in the second year of either Law Enforcement or Criminal Justice.
    • Recipients are nominated by the educational institutions they attend. Preference will be given to non-sponsored Indigenous students.
    • This award is provided by the Alberta Solicitor General and Public Security
    • Program: Criminal Justice - Corrections or Criminal Justice - Policing
    • Value: $500.00

    Sam Bull Memorial Scholarship

    • AIIC offers The Sam Bull Memorial Scholarship (studies in Law & Political Science)
    • The scholarship is for Alberta status First Nation students currently enrolled in post-secondary programs.
    • Applicants are required to apply for the Sam Bull Memorial Scholarship by contacting AIIC office.
    • Students must prepare a 100 to 200 word statement of personal and academic objectives
    • The award will be given for excellence in a program of studies at the university level — $1,000.00

    Scott Land & Lease Indigenous Scholarship

    • The $1,000 Scott Land & Lease scholarship will be awarded to an applicant who is:
    • An Indigenous community member. Proof of membership is required.
    • A resident of Alberta.
    • Enrolled in, or has been accepted to, a technical school, college, or university program.
    • Preference will be given to applicants whose studies will prepare them for employment in one of the many industries we serve.
    • Applications are due by July 31, 2024. Applicants will be notified by September 2, 2024

    Senator James Gladstone Memorial Scholarship

    • AIIC offers The Senator James Gladstone Memorial Scholarship (studies in Business, Finance or Economics).
    • The scholarship is for Alberta status First Nation students currently enrolled in post-secondary programs.
    • Applicants are required to apply by contacting AIIC office.
    • Students must prepare a 100 to 200 word statement of personal and academic objectives
    • Award for excellence in a program of studies at a college or technical institution - $750
    • Award for excellence in a program of studies at the university level - $1,000

    Storwell Self Storage Foster Children Bursary Fund

    • Applicant must have been a foster child with an official Canadian foster care program. Youth who were involved in kinship care or other alternative living situations can also receive consideration for this award.
    • Youth who were part of a Children’s Aid Society (CAS) agency or similar program will also be eligible to apply for this award.
    • Applicant will be enrolled as a full-time student at a recognized general/ vocational College or post-secondary institution in Canada or USA by the start of the next school semester.
    • Applicant must be 24 years of age or less at the time of application.
    • The bursary application deadline is December 31st of each year.

    TC Energy Indigenous Legacy Scholarship

    • In support of Indigenous students (First  Nation, Metis, Inuit or Non-Status) pursuing full-time, post-secondary program at a registered education institute
    • Enrolled in a post-secondary institution for the upcoming academic year
    • A citizen or permanent resident of Canada
    • Located in a community near TC Energy's operations or projects
    • Would benefit from supplementary education funding
    • Valued up to $5000
    • Application Deadline: May 2, 2025

    Ted Rogers Entrance Scholarship

    • The Ted Rogers Entrance Scholarship is aimed at students entering school, full-time to pursue a first bachelor’s degree or first diploma program or first trades program at a Canadian university, college or trades school
    • A Canadian citizen or permanent resident, age 25 or younger
    • Have a minimum cumulative average of 70% (or equivalent) over the last three terms of available marks. Non- academic courses such as career or personal development-related courses will not be considered.
    • Ted Rogers Entrance Scholarships are valued at $2,000 CAD for one academic year.

    TD Scholarships for Community Leadership

    • TD Scholarships for Community Leadership to recognize students who have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to community leadership
    • Are in their final year of  high school
    • Have a minimum overall grade average of 75% in their most recently completed school year
    • Applications will open in September 2024
    • Recipients receive up to $70,000 for tuition and living expenses as well as opportunities for paid summer employment, peer networking and mentorship

    The National Union Of Public And General Employees - Scholarship For Indigenous Students

    • This scholarship assists those studying one or more of the following: policing, criminal justice, community services, or health care.
    • Eligibility Criteria:
    • Child or grandchild (including a foster child or foster grandchild) or a legal ward of a current or retired member of a NUPGE Component or a Component’s affiliate.
    • Planning to enter the 1st year of a public, post-secondary education institution in Canada, full-time or part-time, in the coming year
    • Must submit an original 750-to-1,000-word essay
    • For Indigenous persons in Canada

    Theodore R. Campbell Scholarship

    • The Theodore R. Campbell Scholarship recognizes the academic excellence of an Indigenous student enrolled in an education program Blue Quills University.
    • Applicants must be First Nations, Inuit, or Métis.
    • Must be an Alberta resident
    • Have completed the first year of an Education degree (university transfer) at Blue Quills University and be continuing full-time in the second year of the program.
    • Have completed a minimum of 24 credits in the first year and obtained passing marks in all courses with at least a 70% attendance record.
    • Value: $1,500

    TransAlta Indigenous Student Bursary

    • TransAlta’s bursary program encourages and assists Indigenous students in obtaining post-secondary and trades education as well as other job training
    • Seven (7) bursaries for Indigenous students attending post-secondary institutions – college or university.  Three (3) bursaries for students training in the trades – technical college or apprenticeship program
